Cheap nice looking compact laptop wanted - can be second hand

    Hi all,

I am after a cheapish and very portable notebook. This will be my second computer, so it doesn't have to be a desktop replacement or have amazing specs. It mainly has to be quite lightweight and look a bit cool, as I'll be using it when travelling, and when out and about for surfing and some light music production work.

I'm looking for specific model recommendations, and second hand via **** is a definite possibility. Here are the FAQs answered. Thanks for you help!!

    1) What is your budget?
    500 ish

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

    A. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
    or
    B. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Would really quite like a Sony or maybe an Apple - OS is not really an issue, I can do both Not big on Dells as I've had a bad experience with them.

    5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Surfing, DVD watching, and using music production software such as Ableton Live (although as I say, I have a top spec Mac for this, so this one doesn't have to be amazing, just run the software)

    6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
    Mobile

    7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
    Nope

    8) How many hours of battery life do you need?
As many as I can get

    9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
    No

    10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
XP or OSX - I swing both ways

    11) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
    Widescreen

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

    D. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440***0; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

    13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
    Glossy if poss

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
    YES!

    15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
It will be with me for a good few years

    16) How much hard drive space do you want;
    80-100GB ish

    17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
DVD-RW is nice but not essential

The laptop I just bought fits the bill! Check it out _http://wire-box.co.uk , or look at my forum post _http://www.pcdudes.co.uk/showthread.php?t=711 .

It's got everything you want - even DVD/RW.
It normally comes with Linux pre-installed, but since it costs 369.99 you could buy XP or Vista etc with the difference!

    Hope this helps mate.

check out the PocketBook 360, couple of forums up form the bookwise 1150 forum.

Im in sort of the same postition as you, currently using a 1150 and considering upgrading.

The 360 looks like a wonderfull little device and is very very tempting.

Far too late for this thread but I got an ASUS EeePC900.

The decision was based in two criteria.

    1) Weight - it fits in my ski anorak pocket so is carry on baggage on airlines.
    2) My wholesaler had it as a special offer

I bought the Linux one but couldn't find drivers for my GPS logger so installed XP pro.

Runs a treat but a bit slow at times and I needed to ditch the M$ WiFi s/w in favour of the Atheros s/w to connect to some fussy networks.

Gonna try W7 on it soon though.
