hi all,
Me been stupid and hooked up the wrong hard drive and formatted the thing and placed windows xp system on!

had a lot of photos I really need back, have placed the drive as slave for now but could anyone please point me in the right direction of some good software that maybe get them back for me?

when you formatted the drive to stick windows on did you do a quick format or a full format?

yes,

when you quick format you just rewrite the boot reccord and marks the whole drive available, if you do a full it overwrites all the data.

in your case you have done the good thing and only quick formatted meaning that any space on the drive that has not been overwritten by the files required for windows may be able to be recovered.

the program i have uploaded is a simple undelete program that may recover these files, with any luck your photos were no where near the section of the drive that was accessed when installing windows

did analyze of the drive and only found 9 files? maybe I am doing it wrong, any tips in using your programe?

to be honest its such a simple program that you cant be doing anything wrong.

if your only finding 9 files that may be all thats left,

with the combination of formatting and sticking xp on you may have lost everything that was on the drive.

im sorry to say that im all out of ideas, if the pictures are that vital it may be a case of taking your drive to a data recovery specialist however these can sometimes be very expensive but can sometimes work wonders.

Ok Zad thanks for your help, going to try a few other programes and will post back, Data recovery is very pricey £££'s

Just kicking myself I did not do a back up!

have used this program and has started getting my pics back, really easy to use and works a treat!

its called Recover My Files

some photos are coming up corupt but anything is better than nothing!

You can choose what file ext you wish to search for and let it do the digging!!!!

its currently doing a full deep scan and also you can preview what its finding!

also can be used for deleted photos on mobile phone cards!!!!!!! worth a go in any marrage!!!

Glad you're having some success with the recovery. The moral of this little story is to backup anything that is important to you to different types of media.

Yeah back up your photos, have recovered most of them but sadly some (not many) are lost forever I guess!

but I highly recomend the above software for mistakes.
